The sun shone through the jar of honey on my window sill, lighting it up from the inside like a lava lamp; liquid gold, slow moving and mesmerizing. I stopped what I was doing. It felt good just to look at it. But, I had to have a taste! There is something soothing in watching honey swirl around on a wooden dipper. As long as you keep it moving, the honey curls around itself in amber waves and folds. It won’t drip. But, when all motion stops, the honey is pulled down by its own weight to drip slowly over a warm biscuit, or dissolve in hot tea, adding an indescribable sweetness to whatever you drizzle it in or on.
Fascinating stuff, honey. Thick and sweet and good, eating honey is something you shouldn’t rush. It is something to savor, and enjoy. No wonder the word of the Lord has been compared to the pleasure of eating honey! Not the “studying,” not the “head knowledge” kind of reading, which is our usual way to read the Bible, but devotionally,
This summer, as you slow down a little from your busy schedule, find the time to stop all motion and sit for a while with God’s word. Read it like you were eating the best honey. Roll it around on your tongue. Savor it. Take pleasure in it. Let its sweetness bring you joy, and delight your heart. O, taste, and see that the Lord is good!prayerfully. Like honey, God’s word is something to take your time with, to savor and enjoy. Psalm 19:10 describes the blessings to be found in God’s word as “More to be desired than gold…sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” The prophet Ezekiel ate a scroll from God, saying, “I ate it, and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey.” (3:3) Jeremiah said “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight” (Jer.15:16.) If you take the time to really taste it, you will see that the word of the Lord is indescribably sweet!
